What is a Strategic Plan?

A strategic plan for a library is a written roadmap that outlines the library's vision, mission, goals, and strategies for achieving them over a specific period, typically 3 to 5 years. This document serves as a guide for the library, ensuring that resources are used effectively and efficiently to support the overall mission of the library.

Executive Summary

The mission of the Freeport Public Library is to be the Community’s Center for Information, Recreation, and Lifelong Learning. In support of this mission, the Freeport Public Library engaged in a strategic planning process between March 2024 and June 2024. The resulting plan seeks to maximize the impact and outcomes of services for the residents of Freeport, providing responsive and proactive services.

The Freeport Public Library Strategic Plan is based on input from the Board of Trustees and the staff of the library, who went through a series of workshops with Library Director Ashley Huffines and consulting facilitator Emily Klonicki. Input from the community was gathered through a survey that was distributed both within the library and through library channels, and through non-library communication channels to reach both non-library users and users of the library.

The goals defined through this strategic planning process directly support the advancement of the library’s mission by:

1) Enhancing Accessibility

2) Improving the User Experience

3) Ensuring Long-Term Sustainability

Through the fulfillment of these goals, the library will lead the community as an environment where Freeport residents feel a sense of belonging and have equal access to information and resources. In ensuring that the library’s facilities and services meet the evolving needs of the community, the library will be a welcoming and functional space for both recreation and learning. Finally, focusing on sustainability secures the library’s future, enabling it to continue serving as a vital community hub for information, recreation, and lifelong learning.

Together, these goals ensure that the Freeport Public Library remains a dynamic and essential part of the community, fully aligned with its mission. The Board of Trustees has unanimously ratified goals for the Freeport Public Library as laid out in this plan, and they will work alongside the Library Director and library staff to implement the goals with fidelity.
